Bio/About Me

Laura Granfortuna

I have had a long love affair with design, although I got my start in journalism. I moved to Quito, Ecuador to work as a travel writer after finishing my bachelor’s at UNC Chapel Hill. But I couldn’t stay clear of the visual arts, and after a year in South America I packed my bags for San Francisco, where I earned a master’s in web design and UX from the Academy of Art University.

After graduating I moved, yet again, to Austin, where I have been happily situated since 2011. Over the past several years I’ve done assorted agency work – web design, graphic design, advertising – as well as freelance.

At the time I completed my masters, there were no dedicated UX tools, and I focused my post-masters career on web design because doing the detailed work of wireframes and information architecture in Illustrator seemed far too tedious. Although other tools were introduced prior, for me Figma has been the game changer that has allowed me to reapproach user experience design with confidence and vigor in the past few years.

Outside of my profession, art and creativity  permeate my personal life and daily endeavors. Music has always been a big part of my life. I’m a piano player, and I sing Soprano with a few different choral groups here. I explore visual art through acrylic painting and mandala design, and I engage in a variety of craftwork such as chainmail, crochet, and different forms of carpentry.

Nature is a constant source of solace and inspiration for me, and you had better believe I’ve hiked every trail in the city dozens of times!

I firmly believe that my life-long dedication to art and experience makes me a more well-rounded person and a more capable designer.
